Unless you live in Helsinki or extreme northern Michigan, it's unlikely you'll encounter anyone who would peg Simo as a male name. There's been a confusing tendency in some circles in the US for females to adopt or be given obviously male names (like Michael, Sean, Darryl), but I can't see that Simo would cause anyone confusion if you used it, especially since it probably sounds a lot like known female names like Simone.
