I knew a guy named Brian, and then I found out that he was originally Howie, and had changed it a couple of years before I'd met him.
If you're not happy with the way you feel as Richard, then change it. I also read an excerpt in something--I can't remember what now--where someone was saying that no one they knew named Richard liked his name.
