Re: meaning/history of name Dervla
"Derval" is one of those Celtic names with a complicated history. Some believe that it may be derived from "Dearbhail" or "Dearbhal" and related to the word "dearbha" which means "genuineness". Or it may come from the name "Deirbhile" which is thought to mean "daughter of the poet".Then there is the possibility that Derval is derived from the names "Dearbhorgaill" and "Devorgilla", which are thought to mean "daughter of Forgal". Forgal is a character from Celtic legend whose name is thought to mean "courageous man".There were a couple of famous Devorgillas in Irish history -- one of them a queen. Daividh may be able to fill in some more information for you on this name. He usually signs on in the evening, so keep checking the board.-- Nanaea
