Our daughter's name is Azra and we have come across several references to this name, along with several meanings of it. Just some examples: The poet Heine wrote a poem called The Azra about a youth of the clan of Azra who dies for love. A rock group from Croatia was called Azra (following the reference to Heine's Azras, as the ones who die for love...). While the last name Azra is most often found in Yemen and Pakistan, one of the recent Miss World is named Azra and comes from Turkey.
In the countries of former Yugoslavia, it is most common among Bosnians, both Muslim and Jewish, but it is also found among Romani (Gypsy) in all of the former Yugoslav republics.

Some of the meanings: from Hebrew "strength", Arabic "star". The meaning of "virgin" came up because it is one of the stars in the Virgo constellation...or is it the other way round?

Our daughter's comment: Mami is embarrassinng me!
