It means "son of Alester" in Irish, Mac- meaning "son" in Gaelic and Alester probably being a form of Alastar, the Irish form of Alexander.

Alternatively, Alester can be a form of Alastair / Alistair / Alister / or Alasdair, the Scottish form of Alexander.
