Behind the Name: Message: "Name found in Parish Records"

When I was researching a branch of my family in one of the Parish Records for England, I came across the male first name, Onisephorus (or 'ous'). The entries containing the name were dated in the late 1700's. Does anyone know the origin of the name, its meaning or if there is a modern equivalent?
