There seems to be some agreement, that the first element of LEANDER is "leon" (lion). In other books I've read that it could be either from "laos" (people) or "leia" (prey), but I'm not sure how reliable these books are. So can we be sure, that it's the lion and nothing else?Andy ;—)

Leandder (Leandros) is almost certainly related to "leon", as in "brave person".On a side note, "laos" (people) and "leia" (prey) are rtymologically related according to Liddel and Scott, "leia" being "the booty captured by the people, laos). I have found no credible reference suggesting that "leia" or "laos" are related to "leon".
