Patrick Hanks and Flavia Hodges are two of the leading lexicographers of Britain and Australia respectively. Between them, they've published numerous papers and books on personal name, surname, and placename etymology.

The book which I was quoting from was written by them both in a collaborative effort, published by Oxford University Press, and is titled: *A Dictionary of Surnames*. It's a fairly expensive reference tome, but if you're interested in purchasing it for yourself, you can find it here:
