The Khazar tribes had Marena - a goddess of evil and death. I have read somewhere that that's how the name Marina evolved - meaning "evil, don't take her". I don't know how reliable this is though

Interesting. Marena sounds like Morana, which, according to this site, is a Slavic goddess of death. :) Interesting.
