Mulan is a Chinese feminine name made up of the elements "Mu" ("blossom") and "Lan" ("magnolia").

I guess you've seen the Disney movie MULAN. There's a lovely scene in which Mulan's father is comforting his daughter (who has just struck out in her attempt to land a husband and bring honor to her family). In the scene, Mulan's father tells his daughter that she's like a late-blooming blossom -- which he points out to her on the magnolia tree in their garden.

So we see how Mulan's name -- "Magnolia Blossom" -- literally applies to her in this scene.
