meaning?
My husbands grandfather was named Veldon. We have looked everywhere for the meaning with no results. He was born in the mountains of Virginia in the 1930's and was the youngest child (he had a lot of sibilings, but we don't know how many). we have found that the name eldon and names ending in eldon all have SOMETHING to do with hills, mountains, ridges, etc. Can someone please tell us if the letter V may have significance at all? Thanks!

This type of minor alteration to a well established name was very common, but is now rather unusual in most areas...You might also look at the Utah Name site, which discusses the same sort of name (I think it's on the links list for this site, but if you search for it you should find it).I think inventiveness is a more likely origin, but there is an English surname Velden which derives from Fielden or Felden and means (dweller) by the field...
