No idea, just speculating - but if I had to put English surnames into something looking like Latin, I'd have invented Govus for Gow. (OK - Scottish surnames!) Perhaps someone else did that once?

Same principle perhaps as calling one's son Bob but having him on the records as Robertus. A misguided striving for the posh.
