The ultimate derivation is most probably from "anti," meaning against. The "o" in Anton is an omega, implying grammatically that Anton means "he who is against/opposes".
Related words include *antosis*, "pushing against" and *antomai*, "to meet someone, especially in battle" (Liddell-Scott).
I would bet my last Eurocent that Anthony is also thus related :)
