Help
Hey, I have a Finnish friend and his mom's name is Arja (you say it Ahreeah) and I was wondering what it means. I searched the data base, but didn't find anything, if you know another site or links let me know. Thanks!

HejI´m from sweden, and have only a theory that it means angry.
I´ve also heard that it can mean something that has to do with "eyes".
...but I actually don´t know for sure...

As a Swede, it's only natural that you should associate Arja with the Swedish word "arg/a" (meaning "angry")! We used to make fun of my friend Arja at Swedish lessons at school... :-) But in Finnish, there is no connection. As for your other association the eyes... can't see a connection there, either.

Hi, I'm from Finland, but I haven't got a clue of what Arja means. Some say it's a Finnish version of the Greek Ariadne, but I doubt that, since Arja is a relatively new coinage. It entered the Finnish name-day calendar in 1950 together with other coinages for female names such as Merja, Pirjo, Tarja and Erja. As you can see, these names for a group that's probably intended to sound fresh, cheerful, happy, and most of all, very different from the traditional names. Today, most people named Arja are in the fifties; but I know a couple of Arjas who are around 25. It's considered a plain but not overused name, nothing fancy about it.
