I'm doing some family tree tracing. A relative of mine was called "Vene". He as of Dutch origin from the 1800's. Is Vene - not sure of the spelling - short for something? Please help & thanks.

As a surname Ven or Vene means 'swampy water'. Most surnames starting with Vene- or Veen- refer to either a specific pool or to the activity of cutting turf.

Not sure if this is relevant, but Veen in Dutch means a marsh, swamp, bog ...
