Anyone has any ideas on where one could find information on the average length of names (first and surnames)

You might go back to the home page on this site and click on "Status of the Database" under the heading "About This Site" on the left-hand side. When you get to the Database page, scroll down to "Length" for some statistics on the 10,000 first names in here.
Can't help with surnames, altho, www.genforum.com lists 1,000s and you might work up your own counts from that.

Using Daividh's suggestion, I calculated the average length of the names in this database to be 6.195 letters!
