The Name "Rennie"
Hi!I'm looking for the origins of my husband's name. It's Rennie and as far as I know it's an old Irish name (his family originates in Ireland and are decended from the Normans - the Nugent surname is Norman).Occasionally "Rennie" is a short form of Rendell (also a name I would like the origins of), but in my husband's case "Rennie" is his full name.Anyone have any ideas? :) Thanks!Lynn

I am a Rennie also. It is common on the east of Scotland. Rennies owned alot of land in Angus. First recording was in Angus in the 800s. It's believed to have come from old Norse. Vikings introduced this name to Scotland. Meaning son of reynold. Vikings didn't have their own surnames as such. They made their own names to fit into the places that they settled. Scottish sounding names such as Macaulay and mcleod are also Norse.

My Surname is Rennie and as far as I know we are a Sept of the clan MacDonell, I have always wondered why we don't have our own Clan, I know the Rennie's fought at Culloden, my family are from Fife but I believe the original Rennie's were from Angus or Forfar and Aberdeen. There are a lots of Rennie's in the Butcher trade, by coincidence I am a Butcher to trade.

renniewell often nicknames are given as first names, so the meaning of Rennie could be the meaning of Rendell.
It could be a short form of any name beginning with ren, most likely Renard or Renaud, if its not Rendell.
Also the name Renie is in the database, so maybe its just Renie with an extra 'n'
ask your husband if he might of been named after someone with an 'ren' beginning name.
Also the nickname Renie, or Rennie is often given to people whos names end with 'ren' or an 'ren' sound.
There are lots of those, so its best to find out if he was named after someone.
Best of luck~Silver (SD)

I immediately thought of the Jalna books, set in the 19th-century Canada. Renny was one of the main characters, a charming & handsome man. The books were quite popular here in Northern Europe in the 50s, and as a result, a number of boys were baptised Renny. (One of them was the Finnish-born Hollywood director Renny Harlin.)Also, Renne is French meaning "deer, reindeer".
