As suggested by Anneza, name comes from an anglicised version of Seamus. Seems to have arisen in the crossover from Scots speaking to Gaelic speaking areas of Scotland. Quite common in Scots settled ares of Canada. Also appears in Arabic;eg Wadi al Jamus, Lebanon though I guess that is unconnected.

My best bet would be, a merger of James and Seamus (which is Irish for James anyway). Would that fit, do you think?

I know that in Arabic it's a name of an animal, something like a buffalo.(or maybe it's just a form of James)
