Florence was shortened to Floy when it was megapopular, as a break from all the Flo and Florrie people. My guess would be that it was a blend of Florence and something like Henrietta; it sounds prettier than Floy to me! It also sounds Western i.e. not Native American (if you meant that kind of Indian), but I can't prove it.
