This is an English topographic surname (Yorkshire mainly) denoting someone who lived in a clearing in the woodland derived from the Old English 'rod'. It's believed that the spelling has been influenced by the Greek island of Rhodes.I hope this helps. I don't know about those coat of arms things sorry.
