Re: Cheviot - Old European/ Pre Celtic + Blencowe - Old English
Blencowe possibly means "summit of jackdaws". The first element definitely is from the Celtic 'blain' meaning "summit" but the second element is unknown but I thought it may be related to the Old Norse 'ka', Middle English 'co' meaning "jackdaw" because the place name is found as Blenco in 1231 and later in 1255 as Blenkhaw.Cheviot - the name is Pre-English and no-one is sure as to the meaning. I previously speculated that it may be derived from the Welsh 'cefu' meaning "ridge" but I really can't be certain of anything as no-one has any idea.Sorry I can't be of more help :)
