And here's some phonics for you:
Often, when 'g' is followed by 'e' or 'i', it has the same sound as 'j'. When followed by any other letter, it has the hard, or 'g' as in goat, sound. (grime, goat, guest; gear and geese are odd; gem, generous, germ; gig and gold are odd; ginger, gipsy.) An 'e' after a vowel, or after a vowel-consonant combination, makes the vowel say it's name. (make, lie, scene, toe, home.)
