Re: Malise/Maylise
Maylise looks like a merger between May and Elise, and reminds me uncomfortably of Mayella in To Kill A Mockingbird; certainly more American Deep South than Scottish. However, for those who like that kind of thing, that is the kind of thing they like. The Scottish Malise is to my knowledge totally masculine in origins and usage. My instinct says that it would have been given to male converts and/or the children of priests (perfectly acceptable for many centuries); today we associate organised religion with far more women than men, but in the past male domination prevailed!Scottish parents seem to be getting over it, but in the past they used to give their daughters really clumsy fem versions of male names - Andrewina and Angusina spring to mind. Malisina? Why not? Seems likelier than Maylise.
