Lucien, Gianni? Playground Problems?
Would the name Lucien (pronounced with the French Loo-see-EN, not the English Loo-shen) create problems for a young boy in the United States? Is Luca an acceptable nickname for Lucien.Which do you prefer? Gianni or Lucien?Does anyone have a favorite Italian / French / Spanish male name? Thanks!

My father-in-law's name was Lucien. Because he was called Lucy
he legally changed his named to Tom. Kids can be very cruel when it comes to names.

If it's gotta be one or the other, Gianni will give the kid very few playground problems. It's basically pronounced "Johnny", right? As for "Lucien", the only place in North America where it will NOT get the boy turned into ground meat on the playground is Quebec. There even burly truckdrivers sometimes bear the name. If you live anywhere else, have PITY on the child! But hey, you're extremely sensitive and considerate to even think about this factor. Many people just push ahead with the naming and the kid pays the price.Be well,Daividh

=)Thanks for the advice! I really like Lucien, and I think Luca would be a good nickname. But the more I hear from others, the more I fear the name might just have to be put to the wayside. Afterall, there are tons of GREAT names out there...

Out of the two I prefer Lucien which I have always pronounced Loo-see-en in England. You could consider using Luca as the first name, not just as a nickname, or what about Lucas? I really like that name. It's popular in France too where it's pronounced Luca, although I prefer the English pronunciation.Rosey

I like Lucien, but it does sound kind of feminine. In French, if you are pronouncing a male name, you leave the 'N' sound off of the end, so that might help. (ex. it would be Loo-see-eh). I'm not a fan of Gianni, so I guess I'm saying I like Lucien!Ellie

Thanks for the pronunciation help =)In the Thomas Crown Affiar, they mention the artist Lucien Pissarro and they pronounced the name with the "n" on the end. It now makes me wonder whether Lucien Pissarro is French or not (I thought he was), or whether they mispronounced the name in the movie!I've always been horrible in French pronunciation!
