No idea about Gaona, sorry; Mercurio is the same as the element mercury (Hg), the planet Mercury named after the Roman god Mercury - now, he was the messenger of the gods (and Hg is a liquid metal - it moves around), and also the god of commerce and of theft. Cynical bunch, the Romans ... anyway, words like merchant and merchandise are also related.
