Can someone comment on the cultural history of these laws? Barring societies that feel themselves `threatened' by the modern world (I know this is kind of vague: I mean to include obvious examples Amerindian and Australian tribes), is it only a Judaeo-christian-muslim (Does Israel have such laws?) phenomenon?
Does China have/retain such laws/strong tradition? Korea? Japan?
What about non-muslim Africa?
India does not that I know of.
