Subject: Ziba...?

I encountered a fictional character recently, male, Spanish, named Ziba.
The story setting is California, ~1818, and the character is Castilian.
On the site I read

ZIBA f Iranian
"beautiful" (Persian)

For one thing, the -a ending puzzled me. In Spanish, it is female, right? For another, why the different origin? Y :)
