"Staedter" in German means "townsman", from Stadt = town,city, but one of the German folks on here will have to provide the meaning when the "L" is inserted. Even my musty ol' Langenscheidt dictionary doesn't go that deep.

Down here in the Appalachian highlands, Dan comes out as "Dain" in some local accents, so a phonetic spelling of the nic is a logical next step...
