Meaning of the Croatian male first name Slaven?
Hi all!My sister's got a boyfriend called Slaven Krömar for a couple of months now. Slaven comes from Croatia, and is the son of a German father and a Croatian mother. I wonder what his first name means, actually. Because, in my country (= the Netherlands), Slaven seems to be a ridiculous first name, as 'slaven' is Dutch for 'slaves.' That's why Slaven is also ashamed of his first name and rather calls himself Dennis. So, I'm curious to the meaning of the name Slaven. I'm sure it doesn't means 'slaves' though. ;-) Who knows the meaning? Thanks to all that would like to help me! :-)Regards,Lu

I'm a Croat and the name has two meanings. The first one is the word 'glory' like the oters said. But it can also come from the word Slav which in Croatian is said Slaven.

Slava means glory in croatian, so he doesn`t have to be ashamed of his name. Maybe he can use the modification of his name Slavko, which means the same, but maybe doesn`t sound so much like slave.Nana

Hallo Lucille,I don't know the name Slaven, but I'm sure it has got something to do with all these Slav- /-slav names in the Slavic languages, and "slav" means "glory".Dag, Satu
