Pronunciation and meaning of Scottish name
I have come across the name Laoghaire. I'm pretty sure it is scottish and feminine. The pronunciation is what I most want to know, and if you know the meaning that would be good also!
Thanks

LaoghaireLaoghaire is a male name. It's a form of the Old Irish name "Láegaire" which means "calf-herder". A newer version of that name "Laoire" is pronounced "LAY-re", so maybe the older versions sound a little bit like that? I don't know...Diana Gabaldon used Laoghaire as a female name in her books, but I won't really trust her! She used "Annikje" as a "Swedish" name as well (haha!).Regards, Satu

Ahem...Don't have my book to hand, but I'm fairly sure that name is Irish/Scottish and male. It's the name the surname Leary/O'Leary comes from.
