Want to see some magic, Diedre? Go back to your original posting and click on it. You will see that most of those names you listed there are printed in BLUE! Now, click on one of them and -- voila! The meaning of the name shall appear to you!Alternately, you can just go to the main page of this website at www.behindthename.com and use the Search feature to find the meanings for most names. If Iansana takes Phyllis' very sensible suggestion to find out what her own name means, perhaps that will be added to this website, as well.-- Nanaea

NanaeaThank you (picture a deep bow with doffed hat ala Three Musketeers). I've often thought about how many of the American Indian and African questions could be answered/shared if some of the people asking would just question the right people. I know of at least three people on campus who are fluent in the different languages (one is a professor/shaman here). I am often asked what something means (by former students and current family members), but often I have to tell them to look it up because I'm not familiar with it. Russian words, Gaelic words, German words...Phyllis

LansanaHave you tried asking an elder from your tribe or is it considered bad manners to do so? If not, you might even find yourself enriching not only your life, but also the life of the elder person you talk with.
I'd like to know the answer to the etiquette question either way.Phyllis
