Re: The name Jonadav
in reply to a message by Ylva
It does exist :)
It is Biblical, and means "G-d has given" :)
See Yonatan (the "yo" part) and Nadav :)

Oh, then it should be among the Biblical namesin the database. Let's hope Mike C. notices this.Thank your for your answer. I've never heard of any with this name, but maybe it is not uncommon in Israel or among Jews? I rather like Jonadav, seems like a fresher variant for those who like Jonathan but find Jonathan overused.

*checks*
Yehonadav (Jonadav) is described as "almost unused". No, apparently it is extra rare even among Jews. Here's why:In II Samuel 13, we read how Amnon, son of King David, fell in "love" with his sister Tamar. His smart but wily friend Yonadav advised him to feign illness in order that Tamar serve him in private, so that he would be able to force himself upon her. After the sin was committed, we read in Verse 15 that Amnon hated her more than he initially loved her. As a result of such a tragedy in the royal family (rather different from nowadays), King David's court decreed that a man may not be in seclusion with an unmarried woman. (Scriptures forbid seclusion with a married woman alone (married to someone else, that is).) (See Sanhedrin 21b.)

I see, I remember this storyThe OT seems full of such stories which are not very "family friendly".No wonder Jonadav is not popular, even though the meaning is good. I guess Amnon is not popular either.I seem to remember that Amnon was Tamar's halfbrother and that her "full brother" Absalon had a revenge on Amnon later? Is Absalon popular?A Scandinavian form of Absalon is Axel and this name is popular here. But I doubt that anyone but a name nerd like me would know that Axel is a form of the biblical Absalon.

*big nerd who knew for Axel*Weirdly, Amnon is rather popular O_o
Absalon (Avishalom) did kill Amnon, yup. His name is rather popular too. :)
