My friend was Desiree, pronounced Dezray (except by her preschool teacher, who insisted on Daisy-Ray!), until she started learning French, when her spelling and pronunciation underwent a sudden change!

I always call her Dez or Daisy and she answers happily enough. I find it a bit frou-frou, but the meaning's good.
