I would like to find out the meaning of the name alvina. It was my aunt's name. She was German from Hamburg. I would like to know how long the name has been in use, (from which century??).Thank you!

Hi Renee Josselin,Alvina (Alwina, Alvine, Alwine) is a female form of the male name Alvin / Alwin, which is short for either Alfwin (Old High German: elf + friend) or Adalwin (Old High German: noble + friend).The name became very popular in Germany in the beginning of the 19th century but was used earlier as well.
