Sabriel, Lirael, Sameth
Does anybody know any of the meanings of the following names? Sabriel, Lirael, and Sameth. They are from a trilogy by Garth Nix. They are great books and he's a great writer, I suggest you read his books.

Hmmm I'm not certain what Sameth means but I know there are people with the last name Sameth, it could just be a variation of the name Samuel. Things like that happen alot.

well I found sam comes from shem which in hebrew means name or renown. I couldn't find any mention of what eth could come from or mean. Or it could just be the english people liked names ending in eth, like Gareth or Elspeth (Elspeth is an old english version of the name Elizabeth. I swear Kathrine and Elizabeth have so many different nick names or names that came from them that it isn't funny.) Well anyways I give up and good luck to the rest of you. ^_^

Ooooh I also found some guy who owns a law firm in Virginia named Sameth Herndon so obviously this name has been used by someone as a first name before Garth Nix wrote his books. I just wish I could find what it means. I've been looking but I can seem to find anything.

Sabrael, Sabriel One of the seven archangels as noted in The Testament of Solomon and 3 Enoch. He is chief of the order of tarshishim (”the brilliant ones”, virtues), sharing the post with Tarshiel and guard of the 1st Heaven. In occultism, he is the only angel who can overcome the demon of disease, Sphendonael.More commonly people will spell the name Sabrael, but just like Azrael it is not as commonly spelled with a riel ending.

Yeah I love the name Sabriel. I think when I get older I'll name a daughter that or Serafina. I've loved the name Serafina ever since I saw it when reading the His Dark Materials Series by Philip Pullman. Most of the names in the His Dark Materials Series are angel names or something to do with the christran religion which makes sense because of what the story is about.

Here's an old message discussing the names Sabriel & Lirael: http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=37027&board=genI've also wondered about the meaning of Sabriel and how Garth Nix came up with it. It's a great book, but I have yet to have the chance to read the sequels.
