Meaning/Origin of Celise
We used to know a person named Celise, and we are considering naming out next daughter that, but we have not been able to find an origin or meaning of the name anywhere. We considered that it might be a derrivative of Celeste or Cecilia, but neither of them list "Celise" as a derrivative. Both Celeste and Cecilia have very different meanings, as well, so we wouldn't know which one to attribute it to. Has anyone ever heard of the name before, or can you direct me to a database where it is listed? I really didn't think the name was that unusual!

Thanks, Maya! Where did you find the listing for Celesse? I'd like to see a pronunciation of it, just to compare further.Tiffany

The word "cilice" is used multiple times in the best-selling book, "The DaVinci Code", to describe a leather strap with sharp pointed spikes to be turned toward the skin and strapped on the upper leg to inflict pain on certain supplicants of the Catholic Church as penance. It is pronounced like "Celise".

I myself am not certain of what the name "Celise" means, and I myself am named Celise! I have told that it probably means something like "celestial" or "heavenly".
