Fiona is in fact a made-up name. The scottish novelist William Sharp (1855-1905) wrote under the pen-name of Fiona MacLeod. It was probably meant as a feminine for Finn meaning "fair". See http://www.slainte.org.uk/Scotauth/sharpdsw.htm
