Maite is originally a Basque name and it means "to love", like most of the Basque names it has a significance.
Mayte is indeed the abreviation from Maria(y)Teresa
Maïté is the variant they mostly use in France (with emphasis on the "i" and an open "e").
Most people do not know there is a difference between Maite and Mayte, I only found out 10 years ago, I'm almost 40 now... My father was a Basque, that's why I am "Maite".
