What about taking a name that could comfortably shorten to Sheri, like Sheraton or Sheridan or Sherwood or Sherborne? Sherborne would be subtle, actually - born Sher! And then it would seem natural for a man to have that name, and you could shorten it to Sheri or Sherry or something and retain the family connection.
