Thank you! A favourite book of mine as a kid had a character named Emerence, and I've never been able to work out the origin.

OT but one of the Chalet School series?

There's an Emerence in those (Australian girl, I think, Emerence Hope).

Yes, Emerence Hope, and yes, she's supposed to be Australian :-)

She appears in "Mary Lou and the Chalet School", the only one of those books I ever owned, and which I read to pieces lol.

The Chalet School series was my obsession after the Anne of Green Gables series :)

Elinor M. Brent-Dyer used an excellent range of names, I'm sure that's what increased my namenerd tendencies :)
