Lowan means fighting chicken, right?
The name "Lowan" for a boy is rare, and the only meaning I've come up with is "fighting chicken." anyone else got something less ridiculous? i really like this name.

According to MacLysaght's Surnames of Ireland, Lowan is a variation of Loane, and ultimately comes from the Gaelic word luan, which originally meant "hound" but later came to also mean "warrior".

Where did you find that meaning?I've just done a google search for Lowan (because of your post on the Opinions board, which I've answered), and all I can discover is that it's a relatively uncommon Irish surname. I can't find a meaning for it at all.The "fighting chicken" meaning sounds highly unlikely, but stranger things have happened. If you tell us where it comes from, we may be able to confirm or debunk it.

Well, that's rather different to "fighting chicken", don't you think? Now that you've given us the correct information, I can confirm that yes, Lowan is the word for mallee fowl in the Wemba-Wemba language, spoken in the north of Victoria, Australia. Note that it's a word, and was not used as a name in Wemba-Wemba. If Lowan as a first name has been used in Australia it'll have been used by non-Aboriginal Australians who have borrowed the word from Wemba-Wemba.However, I have never personally heard it used in Australia, and I still think it's far more likely that the use of Lowan as a first name has come from the Irish surname, not the Wemba-Wemba word.
