Sergei/Sergey etc is an awfully common name in Russia, that's maybe why it's seen as an equivalent to "Charles", which is awfully common in English speaking countries? I don't see any other reason for the names to be connected.

Maybe you could use it as a second name if your wife really doesn't like it or look at the different variants the others have posted already, she maybe likes one of them more.
