Sosamma is actually related through Susan, probably through the Jewish name Shoshana. It is primarily used in Kerala, which has one of the largest Christian populations in India. There is also a historic Jewish population in Kerala since 700 BC, so it's possible that the name was adopted then. However, the more common use is by Christian women.Interestingly, it has also been influenced by Malayalam (the language of Kerala) which you can see in the "amma" ending. Amma means mother, and is often used to refer to Goddesses or very venerated wise women. It can also be used as an honorific for older women.~ Caitlín
