Shiori
I just looked up the name Shiori. It means "bookmark" in Japanese. That does really suprise me. Do you know if that name is actually used as a real name in Japan or was the name invented for a movie?

There are dozens of possible kanji spellings, with different meanings, for Shiori. Written with the kanji meaning "bookmark," it tied for 78th most popular girls' name in Japan in 2006, so it's most definitely in use. It sees to be rising too, as it was 96th in 2005. Unfortunately, I don't have data prior to that.

I suppose I was wrong then ^_^Most of my Japanese name material is at least a decade old ... do you know if the widespread use of shiori is recent?

I prefer the spelling ŽD .. it means "Woven Poem" or "To Weave a Poem" Shiori isn't commonly used because it is a feminine name, but it has the character SHI in it. The kanji for "death" is pronounced "shi", so that particular syllable has a lot of taboos built in around it (for instance: you never give gifts in groups of four because the kanji for four can be read as SHI). SHI is more acceptable in masculine names then it is in feminine names.Other possible spellings include:
ƒVƒIƒŠ (katakana ... it has no meaning)
‚µ‚¨‚è (hiragana ... still no meaning)
ŽjD "Woven History" or "Woven Chronicle".

I know a Shiori (male) who is half Japanese, so I believe it is used. Sorry, but I don't know anything about the meaning.
