I was at school with a little girl named Bellamie - so her parents were fussy about their French genders! Lovely friend, in French ... I've always liked it.
There's also Bonamy/Bonami/Bonamie = good friend. Bonamy Dobree was a literary critic.

bel ami = male,
belle amie = female.
bellamie or bellamy = grammatically wrong
same for the other one, for female it should be "bonne amie".

Seeing that Amy though is a form of "Aimée", maybe Bellamy is supposed to mean "Belle Aimée" = "beautiful Beloved" or "beautiful and beloved".

South Africans are notoriously bad at French - odd, since we're very proud of our French Huguenot immigrants who kick-started the wine industry. You often see well-intentioned spellings like Charl, because Charles "looks English", and because in Afrikaans a final -e is pronounced, diminutives like Annet occur. So, I'd imagine that Bellamy was taken from the surname, and that the (apparent!) presence in it of Amy did no harm at all ...
