I was told my great grandfather is named Hijenio. I can't find this name anywhere. Does anyone have any information about this name? His last name is Martinez. He is from New Mexico, USA. He is of Spanish descent or/and Native Indian. Please Help.

Hijenio is a missformation of the male name Higinio (from the greek Hygies (sane) and latinized like Hyginius/Hyginus, which means "sane, in good shape") The missformation is done by influence of Eugenio, much more usual.
The use of the J letter before the E letter is due, more probably, to the attraction of the word 'hijo' (son) -which is quite frequent and of a known spelling- or to a wish of innovation in usual names, which has been happening these years in South America.

If it's not a Mexican/Native Indian name

It might be a South American respelling of Eugenio or any similar names. Spellings in South America are extremely variable, and not always the traditional Spanish spelling. How is the name pronounced?

I really would like to know where this name came from and if this is the way that it is spelled. This name was my great great grandmothers name and i have given this name to my daughter who is now 19 years old. If you could please help me i would greatly appeciate it. Also could you find out the meaning for me also. Thank You very much Angela Cook

I agree with Merriment. Maybe it could also be derived from "hijo", the Spanish word for "son".
