Brittany or Bretagne
Thank you for allowing me to post to your message board. I know my request will sound unusual to those who have gone to such lengths to compile the information I have found on this site, but I assure you my intentions are only to honor those who have brought such a wonderful gift to me.I work with a network of people across he USA and Canada to rescue Brittany's, once know as Brittany Spaniels. Every dog lover has their favorite breed and Brittany just happens to be mine. We have many dogs who come into rescue with no idea of their background. Where they were before, what their life was like, how they lost their way and ended up in shelters. Of course, we have no idea what they were named. We have to give them a name so we can train them and help them respond to us before we place them with a family. I would like those names to represent the wonderful people of the Brittany region of France where these dogs were originally bred to become the sporting dogs that they are. Most of our dogs do not go to hunting families, rather they are family pets, but still I think there heritage should follow, even if it isn't the name they were given as a pup. All I have found are names of areas and cities: Finistere, Emeraude, Fougeres, Dirian and Vannes. I am totally lost as to the proper pronunciation. Family names would be even better.I appreciate any help you can give me regarding these names or family names derived from this region.....Thank you..Marty

What fortunate dogs, to be so well looked after! You might also like to consider more familiar names with a Celtic history, since Brittany, like Cornwall, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, has a long Celtic heritage, links to the legends of King Arthur etc. Without being too frivolous, even the Asterix comics could be a source. (I rather enjoy Dogmatix.)I have a limited knowledge of French, and nothing much scares me, but I'll happily make an exception for Breton names! They are extraordinary, and it might be humane to consider others as well.
