Please do not disregard the rules for asking questions: what linguistic/religious/cultural community does this name come from, and do you know if it is a boy's name or a girl's name (or both)? There is an old Sanskrit root Mih, cognate with the Germanic Mist, which meant to pass water, emit seminal fluid, but over time got narrowed down to the life giving water dropping from the sky onto the earth, a downpour, mist or fog, and personified as the demon of fog. mihikA meant snow, mist, fog, or camphor; and mahikA seems to be related to this, and means mist or fog.A lot of internet sites give `the earth' as the meaning. I do not know about this, but mahI/mahin derives from mahat great (from mah/maNh/magh, related to English much) and does mean the earth. This might lead to a folk etymology.
