That's interesting, because Maris Liepa is also originally from Latvia.
At first I was sure as well that Maris is some kind of form of Marius, so it was surprising to see it here as a feminine name with quite different origin.. :PIt's good that you put the whole information about Marius - I read it again, and found a sentence that could tell something also about Maris:
"Roman family name which was derived either from MARS, the name of the Roman god of War, or else from the Latin root mas, maris meaning "male" ." Hmmm...
