I thought the Indian name was the one of Arabic origin, so not sure where you got the `Indian meaning' above from. The `Armenian meaning' above also seems to be the same word. The male/female distribution is mainly geographical, and, yes, in the Indian subcontinent it is usually a male name.

Someone who knows Arabic should be able to crrect me (since it appears in the quran, I am sure many non-arabic muslims can speak this word as well). I have heard it as rehAn, with long e as in ray and long A as in car.
